One of the most common causes of short stature is constitutional growth delay with delayed puberty: the bone age is retarded, but the growth velocity is normal. A normal growth spurt in puberty can be predicted, and eventual height will be normal (Fig. 14.29). Although treatment is not essential, these patients are seriously disadvantaged by their condition, which is easily improved with small doses of sex steroids.
